Today Is MLK Day

Today is the day we celebrate the day of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Dr. King was one of the biggest voices for minority people in American history.  He taught everyone to respect people no matter what color their skin was.  He helped give minority people the right to vote and the right to not be harassed by some people in Alabama.  He was a well respected figure for many people in the state of Alabama.  But there was some people who thought all others who were not white should have no rights what so ever.  Dr. King changed that and taught everyone to respect each other.  The most ironic speech from Dr. King was I have a Dream.  Washington D.C. filled up with people from all races to hear Dr. King tell everyone to respect each other and not harass anyone based on people’s skin color or beliefs and only on the person’s character.

While in Alabama; Dr. King faces many challenges from certain people who wanted things to stay the same.  But Dr. King united many people of all skin colors in Alabama to demand fairness for everyone.  And with help from the federal government the dream happened.  Dr. King was arrested while protesting in Birmingham and his Letter from the Birmingham Jail is one of Dr. King’s best pieces of work.

With help from Rosa Parks and Dr. Fred Shuttlesworth; Dr. King helped to change things in Alabama for the better.  Sadly Dr. King was shot and killed way too early in Memphis, TN. This was Dr. King’s last speech.

Today I think Dr. King’s dream has become a great success.  People are treated fairly without judging by the person’s color skin.  And everyone has an equal shot to realize the American dream.  But there is still a long way to go.  African-Americans have been hit hard in the great recession and many are unemployed.  And yes there are still some people who still discriminate.  Dr. King would have been 83 years old if he was still alive today.  But with all the progress made I am sure Dr. King is smiling down from heaven and is happy in the progress made in everyone having equal rights.
